If there was any doubt that Netflix has the power to influence mainstream media, perhaps there is a little less now.
Why Netflix?
Netflix original series Stranger Things and more specifically the show’s soundtrack, prompted a Twitter campaign aimed at convincing the band Weezer to cover Toto‘s hit song “Africa”. The song is played in the background of this scene from Season 1:
The @weezerafrica account was created by a young fan of Stranger Things who is also a Weezer fan. The band and lead singer Rivers Cuomo were trolled online for months; however, the campaign backfired a bit when Weezer trolled back. Instead of “Africa”, the band released a cover of Toto’s “Rosanna” last week:
Not Quite the One…
A fabulous cover, but not the right song. The online prodding continued and on Tuesday, Weezer delivered. The rains are now officially blessed:
Stumbled upon this excellent breakdown of Rosanna by Toto shortly after listening to the latest podcast.
Music producer Rick Beato is a joy to watch and listen to while he breaks down the song.
