Spotify Gets Nostalgic with “Your Time Capsule”

Those were the days…

Music is often the vehicle for our memories.  What music were you listening to in your early twenties or in high school?  What songs were topping the charts at that time in your life?  If you subscribe to Spotify you can now find that out through the Your Time Capsule feature.

Personalization in a Digital World

We live in an era where EVERYTHING is digital, downloadable and available instantly.  As a result, a lot of things have become impersonal.  However, some websites and apps are trying to soften up and appeal to our human need for personal connection and nostalgia.  In addition to personalized features like daily playlists, Spotify recently launched Your Summer Rewind and designed Your Time Capsule “to evoke powerful memories from your youth”.  Now, if that statement doesn’t pull at your heart strings in one way or another … you might be a robot.

The Value of Personalization

These days, most people shop online for at least some things.  Have you noticed that even if you were just “browsing” new furniture or clothing online, those items you looked at will pop up in your email or while you’re searching another site?  This form of digital personalization is called remarketing and may feel intrusive – or it just may influence you to purchase that new pair of jeans.  Where remarketing seeks to manipulate our financial value,  personalization features on our favourite apps appeal to our sentimental values.

Age 16+ Only!

To access Spotify’s Your Time Capsule feature, users must be at least 16 years old.  Apparently under the age of 16 you don’t have enough of a past to be nostalgic about!  Probably a fair assumption.  Most of the tracks on my Time Capsule playlist date back to when I was 16 and older.

What Is In Your Time Capsule?

Most of my playlist takes me back to my angsty teenage years and early “figuring out my life” twenties.  Most of the songs I would definitely crank the volume on if they were played on the radio.  What’s on your playlist?  Here are the first ten tracks on mine:

  1. Jeremy – Pearl Jam
  2. Hunger Strike – Temple of the Dog
  3. Fell On Black Days – Soundgarden
  4. With Or Without You – U2
  5. 38 Years Old – The Tragically Hip
  6. Ironic – Alanis Morissette
  7. Burden In My Hand – Soundgarden
  8. One – U2
  9. Wheat Kings – Tragically Hip
  10. Wonderwall – Oasis
