Here are 5 Instrumental Bands That you Should Add to your Shuffle

Will Sessions – The World is Yours

Will Sessions cut their teeth as the house band for the Motor City Funk Night parties. They released a few singles on the FNR label as well as LP’s like the classic Elmactic, which was Detroit rapper Elzhi’s nod to Nas’ Illmatic.  The can’t-miss-live band (and yes, I was wanting to break dance on the streets of Ferndale, Michigan when I saw them in July) has had high praise from artists for their work ethic and musical talents.

Explosions In The Sky – Your Hand In Mine

The Texan post-rock band were originally named Breaker Morant, then changed to the current name in 1999. Yes, 1999. They’ve been around for a while. They got popular beyond the post-rock scene for what most call “cathartic mini-symphonies”.  The quartet mainly use electric guitars with an added drum kit. Band member Michael James does sometimes substitute his electric guitar for a bass.

Unwrapped – The Light

Ok, so the Unwrapped project is a bit different from everyone else on this weeks Geeks Picks. Unwrapped stemmed from what was at first an innocent jam session between seasoned musicians for their own shits and giggles. The instrumental soloists took cherished Hip Hop beats and flipped them. The new twists to LL Cool J’s Loungin’, Biggie’s One More Chance and Common’s The Light were infectious renditions. The label, Hidden Beach Recordings, were going to use these covers in-house for use as fun music at various events. But that idea got scrapped and they decided to release their secret to the masses. Unwrapped Volume 1 dropped in 2001.

Flying Lotus – Between Friends

Steven Ellison is a genius. The multi-genre music producer, electronic musician, DJ, filmmaker and rapper goes by the name Flying Lotus or FlyLo. In 2012, Ellison began rapping under the name Captain Murphy, based on the Sealab 2021 character of the same name. He kept the secret for several months before revealing his identity weeks after the release of his first rap mixtape, Duality.

This Will Destroy You – Threads

Add another Texan band to the Picks this week. TWDY is an experimental band from San Marcos. They formed in 2004 and are known for their lengthy atmospheric instrumental pieces Their last album, Another Language dropped in Fall 2014 and entered the Billboard Heatseakers Album Chart at #7.
