Back In Time To The Future

It has already been thirty years since the first release and installment of one of the most successful movie trilogies in the Twentieth Century. With all the Hollywood movie re-makes and revamps that are currently in development such as a new Ghostbusters film and a recent announcement trilogy of Alien movies, let’s head ‘back in time’ where creativity meant originality. Let’s head back to the future.

Alan Silvestri – Back To The Future (Theme)

If this classic piece doesn’t sound familiar to you, you probably don’t know how the Superman theme song goes either. Composer and conductor Alan Silvestri has created music for films since 1972 and had been very successful at it. Even though he won many fans over on creating other compositions for other films, this one is his most recognizable.

Marty McFly with The Starlighters – Johnny B. Goode

“Johnny B. Goode” is definitely an oldie but it isn’t to the residents of Hill Valley in 1955. Marty McFly gave his rendition of Chuck Berry’s song “Johnny B. Goode” a whole three years before Berry even wrote it in 1958. McFly was on top of the world when he played this tune at The Enchantment Under the Sea Dance since his parents were falling for each other. This was Marty’s last tune before time travelling back to 1985 in the stainless steel DeLorean DMC-12.

Huey Lewis and the News – The Power Of Love

The first rock song featured in Back to the Future, “The Power of Love” is the definitive trademark song of the film. In the scene, Jennifer, Marty’s girlfriend slips him her grandmother’s phone number since Jennifer will be staying with her for the weekend. McFly then feels compelled to ride on his skateboard while latching on the back of vehicles to make it before the start of the school day. “The Power of Love” was the first number one song for Huey Lewis and the News on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Marvin Berry & the Starlighters – Earth Angel

Almost being erased from existence, Marty McFly has his most challenging feat as he tries to hook up his future parents, George McFly and Lorriane Baines. Marty almost disappears onstage as he appears with Marvin Berry & the Starlighters but George comes through on the dance floor as he pushes away a bully (he punched out Biff Tannen just moments before in the parking lot) from Lorraine at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance. This action alone gave Marty his reason to exist and to fulfill his goal.

Huey Lewis and the News – Back in Time

Huey Lewis made a cameo in Back to the Future as one of the high school band audition judges. You can clearly see him with glasses on at the 53 second mark into the video as he and the rest of the judges don’t seem to be feeling Marty McFly’s guitar playing. It didn’t bother Huey and his news in life since “Back in Time” also charted to number three in September 1985 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart.
