A case in point: Van Halen is back on the road this summer, and when asked about the prospect of creating new music, Eddie Van Halen said in Billboard; ‘There are four people in this band, three of them like rock and roll, and one of them likes dance music’ (referring to David Lee Roth).
If you’re a fan of the band Blur, you know they’ve spent a lot of time trashing themselves as well. Sure, they released ‘The Magic Whip’ this year, but remember when Damon Albarn said it was ‘too hot outside to finish the album’ last year? There’s also The Strokes, who always seem to be on the verge of maybe or maybe not reuniting, if they feel like it. Don’t these people like the music they create?
In a recent interview with Guitar Player, Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds is now saying he ‘never like heavy metal in the first place’. He told the interviewer: ‘I came from Alabama playing country music, surf rock, rockabilly, and stuff like that. I just went through a phase in my 20s where I thought it was rebellious to play heavy metal. And then I met Brann [Dailor, Mastodon drummer] and Bill [Kelliher], and they were really, really, really into heavy metal. And ever since then, I’ve been trying to get Mastodon to not be such a heavy metal band, because I f**king hate heavy metal, and I don’t want to be in a heavy metal band.’
Oasis won’t get back together, Zeppelin won’t play anymore shows, but it takes a medical emergency to get Nickelback off the road?
