Star Wars VII Breaks the Internet

Before we continue, there will be no film spoilers in this article. If you want to learn more, there are a number of websites carrying the various rumours, you just need to Google them.

A Long Time Ago…(well actually it was just last Monday)… rumours started to swirl that the Trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens (TFA) was to be released on Thanksgiving Friday. Over the weekend a 2 second GIF was leaked from the trailer, which started the trailer rumours.

It was J.J. Abrams himself who turned the rumour into fact when he released a photo of a small cue card signed by J.J. himself. The card read:

A TINY* peek at what we’re working on – this Friday in select theaters, hope you enjoy, and have a most excellent thanksgiving! Best, JJ.  *88 seconds

This caused ripples in the Force. On Tuesday morning, ILM and the producers of the upcoming Jurassic World started tweeting that they were going to surprise fans later in the day. That afternoon, the Jurassic World trailer was released early! It was originally scheduled for release on Friday, but with the confirmation that TFA was coming on Friday, they decided to get ahead of it. If you would like to see the official trailer, please click HERE.

As a side note, a fan-made film suddenly appeared everywhere on the Internet on Tuesday afternoon. It is called Batman vs Darth Vader and it is very well done. If you are a fan of either character I highly recommend clicking HERE.

On Wednesday, announcements flew that the TFA trailer would be available on iTunes Trailers on Friday for those fans no where near one of the limited 33 theatres that would show the trailer on the big screen (it was later announced that it would be seen in Canada in only two theatres). It was Thursday when the launch time was ‘leaked’ by the Disney Paris Twitter Account – 10:15 am Eastern Time. Which brings us to Friday. I’m not going to discuss spoilers, nor will I speculate. I watched the trailer to see if it was Star Wars. Before seeing it, I had hoped that it would excite me, as the prequels couldn’t. See if the trailer excites you.

Well the first thing I have to say after watching the trailer is that J.J. Abrams can teach Kim Kardashian a thing or two about breaking the Internet. Just 20 minutes after it’s release #StarWars and #TheForceAwakens were trending on Twitter. What did I think of the trailer? It is clearly a teaser. Other than the dark vs. the light there are no hints at the plot of the film. There are some interesting visuals in the trailers such as a scared Stormtrooper (missing his helmet), more desert (are we back on Tatooine) as well as an odd looking, ball-shaped, Astromech-domed droid. There are stormtroopers and X-Wings. The end of the trailer is what got me excited – seeing the Millennium Falcon racing over the desert. For a moment I was a seven-year old boy again sitting in the front row of the theatre that was located at Victoria Park and Eglinton in Toronto seeing the original Star Wars for the very first time. There were no shots of the original cast in this teaser, which I am fine with. But I am left with one question; who is the character with the fancy new red lightsabre?

I would expect the next trailers in 5 months on the unofficial Star Wars day, May 4th, 2015.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in theatres on December 18, 2015.
