Is This the Year Digital Sales Blow Past Physical Sales?

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Something interesting happened again this past week.  For the third time in 2014–and just the fourth time ever–more digital albums were sold than CDs.

A fast look at the US sales numbers from Nielsen Soundscan show that in the last seven-day sales period which ended Sunday at midnight, 22.99 million albums were sold.  Of that number, 11.10 million were CDs.  The rest–11.18 million–were digital downloads.

And if we’re going to be complete, another 710,000 units were sold on vinyl and (believe it or not) pre-recorded cassette.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out for the rest of the year.
