There's a Petition to Replace Confederate Monument with Statue of Missy Elliott

The debate about the Confederate statues continue to boil over but a Virginia man wants to honour another kind of legacy. Nathan Collin has started a Change.com petition to replace a Confederate statue in Portsmouth, Virginia with a Missy Elliott statue. Elliott was born in Portsmouth in 1971.

Work It

“Getting this statue put up will be a lot of work and you may ask yourself is it worth it?” he wrote in a letter to Mayor John Rowe. “I say yes and ask you to join me in letting us work it. Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it.”

Nationalists gathered to protest the removal of a Robert E Lee statue last weekend in Charlottesville. Since, the question about the Confederate statues have been a hot topic. Artists are speaking out about such statues. Killer Mike announced new anti-Confederate merchandise featuring a Confederacy vs United States scoreboard.

The petition requires 5,000 supporters. At press time there has been 3,154 signatures. To sign the petition, you can go here.
