Casio Announces its First Smartwatch

Casio announces it’s first Smartwatch at the 2016 CES show in Las Vegas. Casio has been making geek-friendly watches for decades but has been lagging behind the current crop of smartwatches until now.

The Casio Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F10 is an Android Wear-powered smartwatch that brings a lot of new features to the platform. First up, it’s rugged, something we have not seen on any smartwatch until now. The WSD-F10 is built to military standard MSL-810. What this means in real terms – it’s waterproof all the way down to 164 feet. It’s shockproof – it takes a lickin’ and keeps on… oh wait, that was the other guys.

Other Features for the Casio WSD-F10

Sensors including:

  • air pressure
  • altitude
  • compass
  • gyro meter
  • accelerometer

This watch is built for sports and outdoor activities and fits right in with Casio’s existing G-Shock line.

Using a unique dual-layered screen that includes an energy saving monochrome mode that only displays the time. According to Casio, this mode can last up to a month on a single charge – unheard of for smartwatches to date.

All these features including dual screen layers, large battery and sensors come at a price. This thing is huge.

Given Casio’s long history of geekdom, it’s nice to see them finally catch up. The watch is expected to be available in a choice of four colours in April for $500 USD.
