No: Yoko Ono did not sleep with Hillary Clinton in the 1970s

If only it were true. The headlines would’ve been delicious. Alas, rumblings flying around the Internet recently were (shocker!) false: Yoko Ono did not have an affair with Hillary Clinton in the 1970s.

Are we disappointed or relieved? A little of both?

It’s a little muddy, but the story goes that Yoko Ono revealed that she and former First Lady-turned senator-turned probably Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton had a fling back in the 1970s. When asked for her opinion on Clinton’s candidacy, Ono reportedly very calmly stated that she and Hillary knew each other in an intimate way back when Ono and Lennon were living in Manhattan.

“We met many times during the New York Vietnam War protests in the 1970s, and became intimate,” Ono reportedly said. “We shared many of the same views about sexual equality, fighting against the authoritarian, patriarchal, male-dominated society we were raised in… We had a brief romantic fling when I lived with John in Manhattan and Hillary was studying at Yale, but eventually we lost touch.”

Except, of course, the whole thing was a big fat lie. A hoax. A fabrication. A funny story from a satirical publication, the World News Daily Report But so many people inquired about it, and it got so much traction on Facebook, that Snopes has an entry about the interaction.

Well done, Internet smart alecks.
