Joni, Cohen, Young, Make Rolling Stone’s Top Songwriters List

And it looks like Bob Dylan is the greatest songwriter of all time, referring to Dylan’s vision of American popular music as  transformative 

Others that made the list include, Paul McCartney coming in at number 2, followed by John Lennon. The rest of the top five have Chuck Berry and Smokey Robinson.

On the Cancon side, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Neil Young – were 9th, 16th and 17th place, respectively.

“She unfurled starkly personal lyrics that pushed beyond ‘confessional’ songwriting towards an almost confrontational intimacy and rawness,” Rolling Stone wrote about Mitchell.

“At 80, he’s still our greatest living late-night poet,” they scribed about Cohen.

They picked Dylan because “No one set the bar higher, or had greater impact”.
