Music’s Dirty Little Secret

Music is powerful, bringing out strong emotions and triggering memories when a favorite song is heard. Retailers know this and use it to their advantage, because that’s what they do.

For example, know that awful hold music you hear when calling your bank, credit card company or some other business where a robotic, monotone voice promises your call is important and that a human will be on the line soon? Those tunes are specifically chosen because they warp your sense of time. The distracted brain doesn’t pay close attention to how long it takes to accomplish a task because it’s focused on other things.

That says nothing of music’s ability to help keep your workout on target and your heart pumping or to make you feel stressed out during a particularly tense scene in a movie. For more ways in which our brains are susceptible to manipulation by chords and choruses, read the whole list here.
